It was a hot summer afternoon in Bangalore (India) in 2008. Looking at the rows of photographs adorning the walls in his store, sexagenarian V. Sukumar, was wondering what the future held for GKVale, the prominent photography equipment and services provider in Southern India. Those photographs were no ordinary ones. Each had a story to tell. One was the portrait of the Maharaja of Mysore, a fond memory of those pre-independence days of India when GKVale Photography store had just started and had elite customers like the colonial British and the Maharajas of Mysore as its regular patrons.

Another photograph was that of Old Cantonment Road which portrayed Picture House and a horse drawn cab passing by. Old Cantonment Road was now MG Road of Bangalore, one of the busiest and most beautiful roads of Bangalore flanked by a number of trees with a wide elevated pavement in the periphery.
This was where generations of Bangaloreans had taken regular evening walks and cycle joy rides. Picture House was later rechristened after its founder in 1910, Gandhara Kumara Vale as GKVale Photography Store. It had stood at the same place on MG Road for 98 years.
Anand Sukumar (Anand), Sukumar’s son, had taken over as the new Managing Director in 2003. Anand had displayed his business acumen on various occasions and was also a first-rate photographer. Sukumar had been brooding over this for some time. F
or Sukumar, managing GKVale was not like managing just another enterprise; it was also about managing the legacy of excellence in photography and maintaining the position of “most preferred photography store” in Bangalore for generations to come. Of late, father and son had differed on the course of action that GKVale had to take due to probable change in consumer behavior. The other problem was related to how the company could limit its loss of revenues due to the forced shifting of its flagship store from M.G. Road...
